On Friday, 13 June 2025, a structural anomaly was detected on the center line of the runway at Luxembourg Airport, prompting an immediate and precautionary closure of the runway to ensure the safety of all air traffic operations. The anomaly, identified as a detachment of the asphalt top layer, led to the temporary suspension of flight operations. The impact was mitigated by using reduced runway operations.
The decision to close the runway was taken in accordance with European regulations governing aerodrome safety and reflects lux-Airport’s unwavering commitment to the highest standards of operational safety. While such decisions are never taken lightly, the safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft remains our top priority.
The anomaly was promptly addressed and repaired by the maintenance contractor responsible for runway upkeep in close cooperation with lux-Airport teams. All necessary safety protocols were rigorously followed to ensure the integrity of the repair and the safe resumption of operations.
This incident is the latest in a series of technical defects that have affected the newly renovated runway since its commissioning. These include repeated surface degradation. Although several temporary repairs have been carried out, the persistence of certain issues continues to raise legitimate questions about the long-term performance and resilience of the renovated infrastructure.
Preliminary assessments — both internal and external — of those defects indicate that the infrastructure delivered may not align with the contractual specifications and performance expectations, namely a defect-free runway that does not require continuous repairs and rectifications. In light of these findings, lux-Airport is currently reviewing all available operational, technical and legal avenues, including potential claims. These steps are being taken with the objective of safeguarding the airport’s long-term operational reliability.
Our teams are working diligently to ensure the full restoration and continuous operability of the runway and to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
