Frequently Asked Questions – Entry-Exit-System (EES)
What is the Entry-Exit-System (EES)?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new EU border management system that records the entry and exit of non-EU nationals travelling to or from the Schengen Area, including Luxembourg.
It replaces the manual stamping of passports with an electronic registration of your travel details.
The EES will not introduce any new requirements for people able to freely move
throughout Europe (see ‘Exemptions’).
When will the EES start at Luxembourg Airport?
The EES will start operating at Luxembourg Airport on 12 October 2025.
Will the EES apply to me when travelling through Luxembourg?
The EES applies to non-EU nationals (for example, citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, China, Turkey and other non-Schengen countries) who enter or leave the Schengen Area for a short stay (up to 90 days).
Exemptions: You are not affected by the EES if you are:
- A citizen of an EU or Schengen country, or
- A non-EU national holding a valid residence permit or long-stay visa for a Schengen country.
How will the new EES system affect my journey through Luxembourg Airport?
While the introduction of the new EES system may lead to slightly longer border processing times, the Luxembourg Airport teams remain fully committed to providing a smooth and pleasant travel experience. Dedicated staff will be available to assist passengers, and we will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure the journey through the airport remains as seamless and comfortable as possible.
Who can I contact in case I have any more questions?
