Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program

Uk 02 1920X1080 1

lux-Airport is proud to announce its partnership with the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network—marking a significant step toward a more inclusive and accessible travel experience for all passengers.

As the first company in Luxembourg to officially join this international program. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard, an internationally recognized symbol, allows individuals with non-visible disabilities to discreetly indicate that they may need additional assistance or understanding during their journey through the airport.

A simple sunflower to support

Travelling through an airport can be a stressful experience. It can be even more stressful when you or someone you are travelling with has a hidden disability.

It helps to get visibility

Not all support needs or disabilities are visible, in fact, many of us have non-visible disabilities or conditions. In some cases, individuals may experience both visible and non-visible disabilities.

A good travel experience for everyone

To ensure a seamless and stress-free experience, lux-Airport has implemented the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program.

Get your lanyard at the lux-Airport Infodesk

In line with its commitment to accessibility, lux-Airport offers the Sunflower Lanyard free of charge at the information desk in Terminal A. Airport staff who interact with passengers have received dedicated training to recognize a wide range of hidden disabilities and to provide empathetic, personalized support.

The Sunflower Program

The right support when needed

It’s important to note that the lanyard does not grant access to VIP areas or Fast Track lanes but rather fosters a more respectful and supportive travel environment.

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program

Enhancing accessibility and welcoming all abilities

The initiative to join the Sunflowers Program aligns with lux-Airport’s ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and passenger satisfaction. In 2024, the airport served over 5 million passengers heading to more than 120 direct destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower provides travellers who require additional assistance due to an invisible condition the confidence that they will be recognised and their needs will be acknowledged.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a symbol used globally to give you or your loved ones with disabilities a way to discreetly indicate to staff and other passengers that you have a hidden disability and that additional support, time, or understanding may be needed to ensure a pleasant travelling experience.

Travellers can request a Sunflower lanyard for free at the airport or arrive with their own.
The lanyard is discreet and can be worn under clothes until assistance is required. Ideally, it is worn over clothes to help staff understand and ‘see’ travelers with hidden disabilities.
It can be worn throughout the entire airport, including parking spaces.

The lanyard is green with sunflowers all over it, and people sometimes use it with a small card that can include additional information on specific assistance needs.

Airport staff have been trained to recognize the branded item and will know this person may need extra assistance.

Lanyards are available for collection either before your departure date and/or on the day of departure.

When you arrive make your way to the Airport Information Desk located in the main terminal just in front of the check-in counters.

It is open from 04:00 to 23:00 from Mondays to Sundays.

Ask the staff member on duty for a Sunflower lanyard and card.
Please note: that either you or someone travelling with you can wear the lanyard – it’s your choice.
The lanyard does not provide a personal staff escort through the airport process by default.
If you require assistance from arrival until you are seated in your airplane, please submit a request for assistance to your airline, tour operator or travel agent at least 72 hours before your departure. The airline will then inform lux-Airport, if you did not already indicate this when buying your ticket.

Should you arrive at the airport and have a flare-up on the day of your travel or at the airport that might require you receiving wheelchair assistance, staff from the InfoDesk and PMR service will arrange for a lux-Airport wheelchair.

You can contact the information desk at the following phone number: (+352) 2464 0

To locate the InfoDesk, please follow the instructions below:

Enter the airport from either the left or right sides: the InfoDesk is on the left side before the check-in queues.
You can also ask any of the staff with red high-visibility jackets to guide you there.
You can find a map of the airport here, the InfoDesk is shown on the second map.

At LuxAirport, our staff are trained to recognise the Sunflower lanyard and provide you with the assistance you may need at any point in your journey.

This can range from helping you navigate the airport from check-in and luggage drop-off to security, and all the way to your gate and into the cabin of your airplane. They can also assist you with identifying rest spots or answer any questions you may have.

Yes, this is possible. You do not have to justify why you need or have a Sunflower lanyard or badge. Staff are trained to ask about what type of assistance you require, and you do not have to disclose your actual disability.

They are made available to all people with hidden disabilities to provide them with more patience and understanding in public spaces such as airports.

The Sunflower is an internationally recognised symbol for hidden disabilities. Airports all over the world are participating in the programme.

A list of all participating airports is available online at Airports around the world – For you (hdsunflower.com)

It makes no difference whatsoever which airport you got your Sunflower symbol from.

As long as the Sunflower is worn so as to be clearly visible, passengers at one of the participating airports will be assisted by trained personnel.

You can access any area designated for persons with disabilities, if you so require at some part of your journey.

You will find the Sunflower symbol sticker or general pictograms for persons with disabilities at such stations.

Do not hesitate asking staff, in particular those in red high-visibility vests, for assistance.

No, no proof is required.

A wide variety of illnesses and symptoms may constitute a hidden disability, making everyday life difficult. This includes, for example, dementia, autism and epilepsy, but also both chronic and acute pain as well as anxiety disorders and Long Covid.

If you feel that you need more patience and support at the airport or in other areas of life, you can communicate this discreetly with the Sunflower symbol.

It is yours to keep, and you can bring it on your next trips.
