Location
Luxembourg is Europe's fifth largest air freight platform with the 900.000 tons of cargo milestone reached in 2007. Cargo connections are firmly established with scheduled daily services by air to six continents and by road feeder throughout Europe. It has direct highway connections to all major European freight destinations.
Infrastructure
Luxembourg has developed an air cargo hub with a unique infrastructure and know-how base. Today, Luxembourg is one of Europe's most advanced, best-equipped airfreight handling centres. Continuous investments from LuxairCargo ensure customers benefit from the industry's latest technologies and techniques.
Luxembourg's thriving air cargo trade brings clear benefits to the national economy - with more than 3,000 direct jobs and thousands more indirectly - which is why customs and other official bodies strive to minimise administrative requirements and develop new systems to improve traffic flow.
The airport itself has a 4000m runway, all-weather Cat IIIb operations, high slot availability and a dedicated cargo ramp for up to 8 wide-body aircraft loading/unloading at the same time.
Security
Security standards in the Cargocenter meet all international requirements for a major airport. Thanks to LuxairCargo a special focus has been made on cargo protection by providing special equipment, such as a decompression chamber. Constant video surveillance monitors all terminals, truck docks, apron and outside areas. The terminal is only accessible for staff and visitors through one centralised gate where they have to submit to security check upon entry.
Quality
The Cargocenter operated by LuxairCargo is a full-service hub designed to receive air cargo, store and palletise it and manage paper or electronic documents and messaging. Besides preparing freight and documents for air or truck transport, the handlers perform special handling, including DGR checking and customs clearance.
Environmental aspects
Environmental design concepts reduce the effect of handling activities on local communities. A cogeneration plant saves 23% on fuel. An 8,700 m3 basin purifies water runoff. Custom-designed aircraft handling equipment lowers noise and emission on the ramp by 70%. Quiet and fuel efficient B747-400 freighters perform 90% of the cargo flights in Luxembourg.
